Katie Whyte

Katie Whyte is a contemporary visual artist based in Toowoomba, celebrated for her vibrant use of colour and distinctive abstract style. Her creative approach reflects a deep curiosity about perception, imagination, and individuality, which she brings to life through paintings, large-scale murals, and creative collaborations with organisations such as WeWork, CoSpaces, and Jericho Road Clothing. Katie’s artwork has featured prominently in community initiatives including the First Coat Festival, Darling Downs Health projects, and the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers.

A graduate of the University of Southern Queensland with a Bachelor of Visual Arts (Honours), Katie explored how painting shapes the way people experience and interpret space. Her academic background later led her to a unique professional path as an optical vision therapist, where she worked alongside behavioural optometrists to help individuals enhance how they process visual information and move through their environments.

This intersection between art and science continues to influence Katie’s creative practice. Returning full-time to her studio in Toowoomba, she draws on both disciplines to investigate how visual perception and abstract expression can deepen our understanding of the world around us. Working primarily in oil and gouache, she produces original pieces ranging from intimate works on paper to expansive public murals across residential, commercial, and community spaces.

Katie has contributed several striking works to Toowoomba’s public art landscape, many of which feature in the city’s public art journeys. Her creations can be spotted on the Mothercraft Daycare building (site 11C) and at the Burrow Café (#OUT6). One of her most recognisable pieces, Each New Horizon (#20A), is a community favourite—an eye-catching mural that appears to flow from the wall down onto the pavement, blurring the line between artwork and environment.
